In a business career spanning over 40 years, chairing my Vistage Group is one of the most rewarding and challenging activities I have undertaken.

In addition to the opportunity to continuously learn from others, including the diverse membership of my Group, I put my experience to good use for the benefit of my members too, through our monthly group meetings and 1-2-1 coaching sessions.

I had over 30 years in the corporate world, about half of which were in senior executive positions including Managing Director, Sales Director, Operations Director and Associate Partner.  Working for some leading international IT businesses and working with major organisations in both the private and public sectors, I benefited from learning about business and leadership from some very experienced and bright people.

I continue that today with the work I do coaching and mentoring business executives and owners, through my own businesses and through Vistage.

Lessons in staff motivation and good leadership traits

Some examples of experiences I have tapped into when working with my Vistage Group members, include:

  • The impact of internal politics and engaging senior executives with very differing perspectives on the direction for the business
  • How much harder it is to implement a strategy than to develop it
  • The importance of pragmatism in order to achieve success
  • Handling difficult communications to individuals and groups about their future prospects and opportunities, during organisational change
  • How to deal effectively with challenging client situations
  • The importance of clarity and prioritisation in order to achieve success within the resources available.

Developing and nurturing talent, delegating effectively and trusting others to deliver what’s required is our primary task as business leaders.  Ultimately, taking care of the people is the most important factor in establishing and maintaining business success.
