Ben Wales

A rocket scientist turned Managing Director, now a leadership coach and Vistage Chair; I work with scale-up companies and see them stand out.

Stand out companies achieve more than impressive results; they delight customers, employees and shareholders. To become noticed for all three takes a rare kind of leader and is the focus of V385; the Vistage peer group I’ve the privilege to chair.

20 years after a career pivot into start-up and scale-up companies I’ve taken a new business to IPO and grown another by 45% (year on year) during the 2008 credit crunch. Most recently I founded a London consulting business then led it through two acquisitions to become the figurehead of a pan UK & Nordics group described as ‘A business to inspire Europe’ by London Stock Exchange Group.

Any Vistage Chair worth their salt (and we all are!) knows it’s rarely plain sailing and can be lonely at the top. I’m blessed to have been successful, but I have battle scars too including a failed start-up, burn out and numerous other scrapes. Resilience, wellbeing and personal growth together are the focuses of V385.

What others say about me?

“An advisor at the strategic level who also gets his hands dirty. The team and I loved working with Ben and I’d work with him again any time.” Hugh Murphy, Global Manager at 3M

“Ben turned around our UK operation, created real value in it and led a fast, professional and successful sale to 3gamma.” Carl-Magnus Månsson, CEO at Acando

Alongside Vistage I run a successful leadership focused coaching and facilitation practice and I research coaching and behavioural change at Henley Business School. I live in Surrey with my wife and three children. To challenge myself this year I’m learning to skydive; the fast way – accelerated freefall from 15,000 ft.
