Ian Brierley

Yorkshire UK, Vistage Chair

Ian is chairman and owner of three businesses covering turbochargers, craft products and textiles.  The companies, based in Huddersfield, employ 60 people and have a combined turnover of £8m million.

Ian joined a Vistage Chief Executive Group in 2009 when he was Group MD of the businesses and wishes he had joined when he became MD of the textile business in 1994. Based on his own positive experience of Vistage when he moved from MD to chairman he set up a Chief Executive Group in West Yorkshire in 2015.

The group is aimed at MDs and owners of larger SMEs from all sectors. Ian joined the family textile business company after graduating in Textiles from Leeds University in 1985.  Throughout the late 80s and 90s, while much of the UK textile industry continued to decline, the company invested in new areas; Lycra and chenille yarns and section warping. Unfortunately the manufacturing side of the business reduced significantly from 1999 onwards.

Ian, and then fellow Managing Director, brother Graham, continued to develop the business, which included a number of acquisitions. In 2000 the company acquired MJJ, which expanded the company’s craft product sales into the educational sector. In 2003 SCM Turbomotive was acquired, a diversification into a completely different market, but with a similar business model. Both these businesses have since doubled their turnovers. Acquisitions were also made in the textile business; MacPherson North (2004), Thornton Kelley & Victoria Warping (2005) and Choicelatch (2008).

Throughout his career, Ian has taken a proactive role within the local business and wider community.  He is currently on the steering group of the Calderdale & Kirklees Manufacturing Alliance and chairs the Central Youth Club, Kirklees Community Foundation and Everybody Active.

Ian is married to Bettina with two young adult children. He is a keen swimmer, cyclist and occasional runner.
