Yorkshire UK, Vistage Chair
Ian is chairman and owner of three businesses including SCM Turbomotive who manufacture and refurbish turbochargers, arts & crafts and educational products providers MJJ and Hewitt & Booth, and the family textile business. The companies, all based in Huddersfield, employ 64 people and have a combined turnover of £10 million.
John L Brierley Ltd was founded in 1893 by Ian’s great-grandfather and has a rich history spanning over 120 years of continuous yarn production in Huddersfield. Ian joined the company after graduating in Textiles from Leeds University in 1985, at a time when it specialised in selling cotton yarn to the Lancashire Mills. Throughout the late 80s and 90s, while much of the UK textile industry continued to decline, the company invested in new areas; the twisting of Lycra yarns, producing Chenille and yarn warping. The manufacturing reduced significantly from 1999 onwards.
Ian, and then fellow Managing Director, brother Graham, continued to develop the business, which included a number of acquisitions. In 2000 the company acquired MJJ, which expanded the company’s craft product sales into the educational sector. In 2003 SCM Turbomotive was acquired, a diversification into a completely different market, but with a similar business model. Both these businesses have since doubled their turnovers. Acquisitions were also made in the textile business to either increase the company’s product range or consolidate the industry; MacPherson North (2004), Thornton Kelley & Victoria Warping (2005) and Choicelatch (2008).
Throughout his career, Ian has taken a proactive role within the local business and wider community, having been President of Kirklees Junior Chamber, Chairman of the Yorkshire Regional Group of Junior Chambers and president of the Huddersfield Textile Society. He is currently chairman of the Central Youth Club, a trustee of Kirklees’ Community Foundation and a co-opted member of a Kirklees Council Scrutiny Panel.
Ian is married with two teenage children. He is a keen swimmer and cyclist, his bike being the favoured mode of transport for his daily commute to work. He also describes himself as an ‘occasional’ triathlete.
Ian has been a member of a Vistage Chief Executive Group since 2009 and wishes he had joined when he first started running the business. Based on his own positive experience of Vistage he is setting up a Chief Executive Group in West Yorkshire.
