Worcester, Vistage Chair
Ian has a wealth of experience across company functions and regions of the Globe. After completing a PhD in Industrial Chemistry at UMIST under sponsorship from British Petroleum, he got stuck into reality by taking on a Manufacturing position with Shell Chemicals. From there his career has taken him into almost every function of a company and across the world.
Ian has worked within Sales & Marketing, Technology, Manufacturing, Finance, Supply Chain, and numerous commercial and business management positions where at one stage he ran a $1 billion Global Chemicals business. He has lived and worked in many of the major industrial geographies, i.e. USA, Europe and Asia, which has also allowed him to follow his passion for travel where so far he has managed to visit enough countries to tally up with his age!
At one stage he quit his executive job in order to go and learn Chinese in a Chinese University, along with shorts, backpack and students for colleagues.
Most recently Ian set up a Joint-Venture in China, taking it from a Memorandum of Understanding on piece of paper, to a new factory, organisation and functioning company where he was the GM/MD.
Ian has now returned to the UK after over 17 years abroad and is bringing his wealth of experience to support others via the Vistage platform. At the start of his first job, a senior manager who was instilling a “just do it” attitude said to him “it’s easy to make no mistakes when you don’t do anything”, and ever since then he has strived to “make it happen”.
It’s a simple saying “two heads are better than one”, but it’s a powerful one – there is no better way to get good results than to pool brain-power. I’ve seen, experienced and done that many times, that’s why I believe in it – so the Vistage peer group concept fits perfectly in my mind.
Outside of work, apart from enjoying travel and red wine, Ian is a Classic Rock fan and his interest extends to occasionally performing live on stage!
