Chair Bio

Jim McLaughlin

Jim has a background as a leader in business development for blue chip organisations including Reed International and Racal Group, culminating in a six year stint as International Sales Director for online information at the Financial Times. With 20 years subsequently running his own businesses, he has a profound understanding of what it takes to achieve success. He knows from personal experience the frustrations and difficulties that can accompany the quest to achieve business goals without sacrificing a healthy work/life balance.

He coaches, trains and mentors current and future business leaders, delivering successful outcomes for SMEs from a handful to thousands of employees as well as major corporates like Microsoft, Mars and GSK. He’s seen first-hand most of the problems that business and personal life can throw at us.

Jim speaks six languages and has worked in 50 countries, building and managing global businesses. He’s been a successful business owner since 1997, setting up, managing and selling a technology company. Since 2005 his current company, Axiall, has helped 150 SMEs grow and find new markets, customers and partners across the UK and worldwide.

Away from business he works with a number of charities including Drive Forward Foundation, Young Enterprise and Career Ready – training, coaching and mentoring young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in preparation for their working career.

Jim believes passionately in helping CEOs, MDs and business leaders focus on unlocking their potential to achieve both their business goals and personal satisfaction. He brings energy, direction and empathy in guiding others to find their own solutions and path to realise their ambitions.

Vistage Chairs are seasoned business executives and come from a variety of backgrounds and industries. We hand-pick them based on some common and well-proven criteria. They’re great listeners; they’re people-orientated and results driven. The role of a Vistage Chair is to ensure that every bit of experience and wisdom is applied in each Vistage meeting. Our Chairs are accomplished leaders (many are former MDs or CEOs). They are part facilitator, part coach and are committed to the success of their group members.
