John Richard Arthur Ward

Staffordshire , Shropshire and SE Cheshire UK, Vistage Chair since November 2001

I was a Regular Army Officer in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding) for 23 years . During my service I served all over the world , including on a number of operational tours . I took early retirement in 1988 as a Lieutenant Colonel following command of an infantry battalion .

I joined the London Borough of Tower Hamlets as Chief Executive in Bethnal Green , during which time I led a major regeneration of the East End of London including Bishopsgate and Whitechapel and the famous Spitalfields , Brick Lane and Columbia Road Flower Markets .

In 1991 I set up Staffordshire Training and Enterprise Council ( TEC ) , one of the largest in the country and established it as the strategic convenor for economic development in the sub region . I set up and ran a range of business excellence programmes across Staffordshire and at the close , the TEC was the winner of the Midlands Excellence Award for the Best Service Sector Company .

I am the former Chairman of The Consumer Council for Postal Services in the Midlands and a main Board Member . I was also formerly the Chairman of the Fundraising Committee of the National Memorial Arboretum , the founding Director of the West Midlands Business Council , President of the Chartered Management Institute in Staffordshire , a member of the Council of the IoD West Midlands and a member of the IoD Policy Voice . I am a member of the Management Board of the West Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association and a former member of the Employer Liaison Committee . In addition , I have been a member of a number of Regional Working Groups , including the Regional International Trade Strategy Group and Chairman of the Milton Keynes and South Midlands Steering Group .
