Nick Bates

Yorkshire, Vistage Chair since February 2014

Nick was a lawyer for 25 years at Walker Morris and then Irwin Mitchell. He was a “leader in the field” advising major PLCs, family owned business, partnerships, charities, local authorities and individuals on managing and avoiding risk and where necessary fighting for their rights in the courts (including in the Supreme Court) and through mediations.

Over the last 15 years he has also held senior management positions, including on
Executive Boards, setting strategy and budgets and managing change for teams in London and Yorkshire (in Leeds and Sheffield), culminating in being the Regional Managing Partner of the Leeds office of Irwin Mitchell.

Nick has attended management and leadership courses at Harvard, been a trustee of a registered adoption charity, sits on a government funded appeal body and has been involved with the Chamber of Commerce, the CBI, Leeds & Partners Advisory Board and with joint ventures with the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Leeds Rugby Foundation and is an active and qualified sports coach. As a result he is well known and respected in both the legal and the business communities.

Nick has never been just a lawyer. The work he carries out is always undertaken in partnership with his clients. He spends time knowing their business and commercial aims and challenges. He is a trusted confidante around the boardroom table across numerous sectors and industries and in relation to all aspects of running a successful business, through both good and bad times. He focusses on helping businesses grow, developing the key individuals and building lasting personal and business relationships.

He is now utilising all the skills he has learned in his role as a Chairman of
Vistage private advisory groups. This involves coaching and facilitating senior
business executives and business owners in a supportive environment to solve challenges and evaluate opportunities so as to be able to grow and make both their leadership skills, businesses and personal lives more successful and fulfilling.

He is setting up Vistage groups in Yorkshire to include MDs and business
