Leadership: Unleashing the power of group identity

Overview

This session aims to equip leaders with a practical understanding of how to use the power of group identity to unleash higher performance in their organisation.

Why should CEOs be interested?

Enhancing group identity is not an end in itself; the reason it matters lies in the power of group identification to change how people think, feel and behave. Ultimately, this affects performance: in sports teams the level of team identity predicts as much as 50% of the variation in team performance outcomes; and much research on work performance, including well-known recent studies by Google, shows that group identity and the psychological safety that comes with it, is the single most powerful predictor of team success.

Key points covered

Starting with a brief introduction to the psychology of groups and the role of leaders, the session is built around four exercises. Participants will review their own current approach to four crucial tasks, share with the group and plan for changes designed to increase their people’s identification with the business and its purpose, their commitment and performance. Examples from businesses we have worked with will be provided, but many of the ideas will come from other participants’ own experience.

Objectives

To provide participants with a clear agenda for developing group identity within their own business and a plan for changing their own behaviour to make this happen.

Take-away tools

Participants will receive the session slides, signposts to other resources and a workbook to support their own development.

Real world application

Leader behaviour powerfully affects organizational performance; learning to behaving in ways which drive group identification will help participants to unleash the potential of their people to perform at their best.
