Speaker Bio

Mike Ferguson

Mike originally qualified as a Chartered Electrical Engineer and subsequently held several managerial posts in manufacturing and telecommunications, setting up his own electrical contracting company in 1981.

For the last 30 years, however, Mike has been working primarily in the fields of management and leadership development, having discovered his real interests in ‘human software’ and the implications for people development and optimum personal performance. His special interests include the development of self-efficacy and the profound developments in cognitive and self-image psychology that have occurred during the last few decades. He has supervised an extensive study of the characteristics of ‘successful people’ and how these particular qualities can be developed effectively in others. His use of the outdoors as a learning environment to support action learning and team development is reflected in many of the People Development programmes he leads.

Mike’s commercial activities extend across a very wide range of private and public-sector organisations. In addition to his roles as a Non-executive Director and Charity Trustee, he is consulted widely by organisations seeking cultural change and improved use of their human resources, and as a Coach for their senior staff.

Recent projects include the development and implementation of the performance appraisal systems for GMC-registered medical doctors across the UK, and the selection process for the London 2012 Olympics Gamesmakers. He co-presents The Confident Leader programmes for the NHS.

He is also a Registered Hypnotherapist.

In addition to his commercial work, Mike held senior posts at leading UK University Business School for many years, and continues to supervise research and deliver work as a Visiting Professor at Business Schools both in the UK and overseas.

Mike joins the Bureau from The Academy of Chief Executives in May 2018.

The Psychology of Success

Overview:

Mike Ferguson is a business psychologist and has spent almost 30 years studying ‘successful’ people and the thinking through which they achieved it.

As a Business School academic his work was initially research-driven. However the practical implications, and applications, for his learning are so profound that he joined our team here at Developing Professionals International Limited through which the learning can be more widely shared.

Based upon recent developments in cognitive psychology, this talk is nevertheless as practical as DIY. There are three tools which – once pressed into service – can help us make our plans come alive. Mike demonstrates how our minds actually function and explains in plain language how we can program those parts of our ‘human software’ to which we usually have no conscious access. We will see that we already have the essential tools necessary for success at our disposal - and we will see that once we change the way we think, we change the way we act.

“What we learned, above all else, is that successful people have certain styles and patterns of thinking which anyone can learn to emulate. It’s more about how we need to think than what we need to think – and unfortunately most of us were just not taught how to think. It is just somehow assumed that what we do is the best and only way. Unless you are very fortunate – it isn’t!”

Some of the specific questions this talk will address are:

  • What is ‘success’, and how does it relate to happiness?
  • Does it matter if we achieve it?
  • What are the two essential requirements for success to materialise?
  • How do we operate in our heads in relation to success and achievement?
  • What practical steps do we need to take to get what we want or to where we want to be?
  • What role does ‘luck’ play?
  • Are there really no limits on what we can personally achieve?

Mike is a natural teacher and has an engaging, entertaining style that inspires his audience to go off and profoundly examine their approach to work – and life!
