Using the Magic of Constellations to Resolve Stuck Issues
Overview of session:
Why this is of particular interest to CEO’s
This will provide a new way of resolving significant problems, understand the relationships between your team and give you insights into yourself and the future possibilities.
Objectives of Session:
The session is in 2 parts.
The first part uses the whole group to participate in a Human Constellation and will help some of the participants get right of the heart of a problem that previously seemed intractable and will provide quick and effective solutions.
The second part allows all the members to create their own constellations using metaphors and in pairs or triads to investigate and resolve a particular issue or to explore their current and desired future.
Value and Takeaways:
- Resolve one stuck issue for several participants
- Demonstrate how Constellations can be a novel and useful way of processing stuck issues
- Participation in a whole group Constellation
- Participation in small group metaphorical Constellations
- Option to have one of your issues processed
- Understanding what a ‘Constellation’ is
- Understand how to use the method in your organisation
- How to use the method in your 1 to 1’s
What is a Constellation?
A constellation is a living map made of neutral individuals who are used as representatives for specific people, teams, divisions, products or more abstract elements like ‘our customers’ or ‘our culture’.
This has grown out of the work done by Bert Hellinger, a German Monk turned Psychoanalyst. I have further developed it using Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling from the work of David Grove.
Why a constellation actually works is hard to explain (maybe Quantum mechanics might help!). The important thing is to experience the power of them in unlocking a stuck problem.
Overview of a Human Constellation
With guidance from the facilitator the client is invited to choose different representatives for each important element and then simply place them in the space in relation to each other. The client then steps back and becomes an observer of a remarkable but highly effective process that doesn’t use intellectual thinking but embodied information.
A pattern emerges. A pattern which is an external expression of the hidden, internal dynamics in the system. This initial map of ‘what is’ is illuminated to identify the dynamics that are blocking or causing difficulties and, as the constellation develops, missing conversations are completed, what has been excluded is re-membered and fresh resources located. Through a combination of facilitation informed by a knowledge of the dynamics which sustain and limit systems and the phenomena of representative perception the constellation shows what is needed for change. A new pattern emerges that creates fresh insight and then resources and resolves, bringing balance to the whole system.
Overview of a Metaphorical Constellation
Where there are not enough people to run a constellation, or to run a constellation in a 1 to 1 it is possible to use objects as metaphors for the people.
You can use Lego bricks, Post it notes, or other objects. I always use pebbles/stones as I find the variety of sizes, shapes, colours and textures can be very helpful metaphors and add significantly to the knowledge.
Actions I expect them to make and Real World Applicability
I expect participants to come away from the session with:
- A significant problem resolved
- Deeper insight their current state and the future they want.
- A desire to use Metaphorical Constellations with their team and family in the future
