He is an accredited Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) Practitioner as well as being an APMG accredited Change Management Practitioner. He is an experienced Agile practitioner frequently engaged in the roles of Scrum Master or Product Owner.

Steve has always been entrepreneurial in nature; his first paid assignment was to write some software for an educational IT provider when he was 12 years old. He went on to start one of the first Internet Service Providers in the UK. A company that was founded on £80k of friends and family debt and that sold 7 years later in a deal worth £300 million and creating 14 millionaires overnight.

Fast forward to today where one of Steve’s business involvements is as the founder and chief advocate for an assessment tool that helps people in business to understand their unconscious biases and to be able to ensure that teams have a balanced perception of the world around them. This is a lab to market venture that has taken ten years to develop involving academics from around the globe.

Steve thrives on positive disruption and loves to see organisations take advantage of emerging technologies to create solutions that simply would not have been possible previously. He believes change is the only constant and the questions he poses is a simple one… “Would you rather be positively disrupting your market? Or being disrupted by someone else?”

“I’m not biased but…” - The Power of Perception

Session Overview:

Steve's session dives into the contentious topic of unconscious bias from a neuroscientific perspective. It provides delegates with an assessment of their perceptual biases and gives them a language that allows them to proactively challenge their own and others’ situational perceptions.

This session is designed to show you how to use the power of perception as a tool to enhance business performance, build trust, manage conflict and drive change. This workshop is unique – there is nothing else like this available in the world today. It gives insights into the neuroscience of perception and perceptual models and how we can all be subject to unconscious biases in our work and personal lives.

As leaders we must understand how our own perception shapes our thinking and our responses to the situations we are in. We must also understand how the individuals in our team can perceive situations differently and how to get the best from them when perceptions are in conflict. In this workshop we make extensive use of individual and small group exercises to drive this understanding and reinforce the reflective practices necessary to make perceptual reasoning a more natural process.

There is the option for group members to take a complimentary Perception Profile Assessment to help them better understand how their perceptions can differ to those sitting next to them. It also offers tools to help attendees maximise their “Perceptual Superpowers” and to reflect on their “Perceptual Blind Spots”. This workshop is based on 9 years of research conducted in partnership with staff from 3 Universities, 2 in the UK and one in Australia.

Outline:

  • Neuroscience of perception
  • Process of perception
  • Unconscious bias
  • Semantic/Sentiment analysis
  • System 1/System 2 thinking
  • True diversity
  • Psychometric testing
  • Personality testing

Objectives of the Session:

  • Understand the process of perception.
  • Demonstrate how your business web/email communication creates specific perceptions.
  • Discover how the ‘eyewitness problem’ creates conflict at work and what to do about it.
  • Acknowledge how we all see the world differently and how to drive consensus.
  • Traverse the difference between truth and fact when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Reinforce the value of trust as a key leadership tool.
  • Identify perceptual gaps in your team using perception analysis techniques.
  • Find out how Perception Profiling can be used to promote a true diversity of perspectives.
  • Appreciate the difference between individual and group influenced perceptions and biases.

Takeaway Tools and Value:

  • Workbook for notes on the main takeaway points.
  • Optional complimentary Perception Profiling Assessment Report.
  • An online tool for reviewing your web/email content and the perceptions they create.
  • Perception/Reality Gap challenge and reflection tool.

Practical Projects – Delivering Successful Projects in an Agile World

Session Overview:

Steve's session is lively and very hands on! During the session the group will be responsible for delivering a village made from Lego™ using Agile Project Management techniques. Sounds simple doesn’t it? But like every other project it’s subject to the three core tensions. Time, Cost & Quality… Let the project games begin!

This session is aimed at leaders and business managers who work in organisations that have internal (and external) projects. But they feel they could run them better! It might be that you are used to running more formal projects based on methodologies such as PRINCE-2 but you feel like it’s too bureaucratic and process-bound to be effective. Or, it could be that you don’t really use any sort of formal methodology and somehow things just always seem to get delivered, often with lots of sweat, stress and some tears from the project team.

Either way, this workshop provides a solid, practical way to create and run successful projects. Using Agile (Scrum & Sprint with Kanban) techniques the group are tasked with building a village from Lego™. They must complete the work to an acceptable quality, strict timescales and agreed budgets.

This workshop is not aimed at creating Project Managers, instead, it is specifically designed for business leaders and managers who get involved in projects. It promotes a practical, event-driven way for businesses to deliver successful projects and allows business leaders to update their knowledge of project management to current best practice in a fun and informative way.

Outline:

  • Business Project Management
  • Agile Techniques
  • Kanban
  • Scrum & Sprint
  • Planning Poker
  • Practical Project Management

Objectives of the Session:

  • Understand Agile project management terminology.
  • Learn through practical experience, how Agile Project Management works.
  • Recognise how Agile Project Management could work in your organisation.
  • Identify people within your business who are suited to delivering Agile projects.
  • Review how mature your organisation is in its approach to delivering successful projects.

Takeaway Tools and Value:

  • Workbook for notes on the main takeaway points.
  • Best Practice Project Management techniques.
  • Agile Project Roles & Definitions guide.
  • Access to a Vistage exclusive Dropbox shared folder with regularly updated Agile Project Management tools and templates.

Love Your Disruptors – Thriving Not Just Surviving in Times of Change

Session Overview:

Steve's session provides actionable insights and tools that cover the people, process and technology side of innovation and change. Attendees leave energised and equipped to thrive in times of significant change.

This session is aimed at senior leaders and executives who want their business to thrive not just survive in times of significant change. The session covers two fundamental types of innovation and seven ways that existing products and services can be restructured and repurposed, or, that new products can be created. I also provide a repeatable five-step innovation process. During the session, I bring to the table three examples of organisations that have continually innovated over the course of their histories. I then show how their innovation has positioned them as brand leaders today even though they are all well over 100 years old. I prove to the group that in doing so, these brands have also managed to stay true to their original core values and beliefs.

A session like this has limited value unless you leave it confident in how to effect change in your workplace. With this in mind, I also cover how to get leadership and wider organisational buy-in to delivering change. You will be able to identify and work with both your natural change champions and your more resistant or cynical staff. During the session, attendees receive concrete strategies and tools that can be taken back into the workplace for immediate use.

Outline:

  • Business Change - Change Management
  • Culture of Change
  • Business Innovation – The Innovators Dilemma
  • Innovation Process
  • Market Disruption
  • Teal Organisation
  • Technology Pervasive Environments
  • Change Champions – Change Cynics
  • The Frightcited© Business

Objectives of the Session:

  • Understand change is constant, but we can choose how we engage with it.
  • Acknowledge everyone is in a “Technology” business and how that impacts what we do.
  • Recognise which of your products and services are prime for innovation.
  • Learn how to link future innovation with your core business principles and beliefs.
  • Identify how you can spot and engage the natural change champions in your business.
  • Review how prepared your people are to actively thrive in times of change.

Takeaway Tools and Value:

  • Workbook for notes on the main takeaway points.
  • Continual Innovation Model & Process.
  • Collaboration/Collusion reflection tool.
  • Access to a Vistage exclusive Dropbox shared folder with regularly updated research/tools.
