Is your strategy execution up to scratch?

As a business grows, it’s no surprise that running that business can become more complex. A business owner needs to have the right strategy – not just to grow, but to grow in the right direction.

When multi-award-winning Vistage speaker Pete Wilkinson did his MBA, he was impressed with the coverage of strategy development, but felt that there wasn’t enough emphasis on strategy execution. That was when he designed and built his 1-3-5® strategy execution tool.

“It’s been the foundation of most of my work for the last 15 years”, says Pete. “In the last few years, we at Reclaro have designed a software tool that brings it to life. It’s a very simple tool that allows businesses to clarify where they want to be, what they need to focus on to get there, and how they’ll get it done.”

Pete’s 1-3-5® framework is one of the tools that he will cover in his upcoming Vistage event: Five Steps to Simplify Strategy Execution & Deliver Better Results. Taking place on Wednesday, June 12th, the event is open for registration here. We spoke to Pete to discover what attendees can expect on the day…

The biggest challenge for growing businesses…

The biggest challenge for a business that is growing, says Pete, is becoming more complex. “There are a lot of assumptions”, he says. “Business leaders assume that they can add more people and that they’ll automatically understand the company’s mission, values and plan.” This isn’t necessarily the case.

A smaller business means greater visibility: a clearer insight into the company’s goals. As a business grows, this clarity can be lost. “Everyone is busy, but are you sure they’re busy with the right things?”, explains Pete. “Everyone is working hard, but are they really being productive?”

Pete finds that different functions within a business can sometimes operate as silos as a company grows. “The collaboration between sales, marketing and operations, for example, needs to be kept really tight”, he says. “When you don’t have a framework or a system in place you’ll have different departments going in different directions if they’re not taking the right action.”

“In the UK we currently have a productivity paradox”, he adds. “The UK hasn’t increased its productivity levels with the likes of France, Germany and the US. We’re lagging behind – badly – and it’s largely because we’re not using the right frameworks so people know what they’re supposed to be doing. Using these frameworks means you can make different decisions. You can have better conversations. You can allocate resources accurately – and you can’t do any of these things if you’re in the dark.”

What will I gain from attending?

“It’s going to be focusing on five steps, which include building out a 1-3-5®”, says Pete. “But it’ll also focus on the issue of getting alignment within the company and finding a simple way to track performance.”

Those who attend will be given a simple framework – already used by over 2,000 businesses – to improve strategy execution within their business. The event will also provide practical tools and tips that attendees can implement as soon as they return to their business.
